In Kyle of Lochalsh, officers conduct a search warrant on an elderly neighbour’s flat. They suspect she is dealing Class A drugs right under their noses. In Inverness, fears grow for a missing father. A sighting on CCTV gives the police some clues of his movements, but he has been missing for days. The man’s friends and family worry about his mental health and the search is escalated to high risk. It’s day one on Skye for rookie cop Cameron as a 999 call comes in reporting human remains spotted in the island’s main harbour. And wildlife officer PC Dan Sutherland investigates the suspicious sudden disappearance of a protected, and satellite-tagged, golden eagle.

Limbs in the Loch: Catching a Killer
William Beggs is wanted in connection to the murder of Barry Wallace but has fled the country and handed himself in to police in Amsterdam, hoping to benefit from their robust extradition laws. He claims that he won’t stand a fair trial due to the press coverage of the case in Scotland. While extradition proceedings take place, Strathclyde Police use the time to build a strong case against Beggs. They return to his flat in the hope of finding additional forensic evidence. At the same time, they uncover more attacks linked to Beggs and make a crucial breakthrough when a new witness comes forward. Back in Amsterdam, Beggs is about to learn his fate – will he be extradited to the UK to stand trial for the murder of Barry Wallace.
Limbs in the Loch: Catching a Killer
After 12 months of legal wrangling, William Beggs is finally extradited from the Netherlands to Scotland, where he will be tried for the murder of 18-year-old Barry Wallace at the high court of Edinburgh. Beggs denies the killing, but blood samples belonging to Wallace were found in his flat. The Crown must now prove beyond reasonable doubt that Beggs is the killer and will be relying on a former friend of the accused to give evidence. In accordance with Scots law, the Crown can’t inform the jury of Beggs’s previous convictions. Will William Beggs be found guilty, or will he walk free.

Exploring some of the projects taking place across the continent, Libby reveals how puffins on Northern Ireland’s only inhabited island are being protected from furry intruders, why racoon dogs are moving south into Sweden, and how a highland landscape is being completely transformed within the biggest National Nature Reserve in the UK. Ultimately, she discovers that despite their different objectives, these projects all have one thing in common. At their heart are passionate people making an extraordinary effort to help bring our endangered wildlife back from the brink.

Andy Stewart returns to the charts with Donald Where’s Yer Troosers, and Desmond’s first appears on Channel Four. The Proclaimers score another hit with I’m On My Way, and the Berlin Wall comes down as the decade comes to an end.
Highland Cops
In rural Aviemore, it’s the landscape that threatens as a young man is reported missing overnight from a residential activity centre. The specialist police mountain rescue team assemble alongside local groups as they search the nearby foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains. The missing man has been lost in the wilds overnight and, with temperatures plummeting, it’s race against time to find him before he comes to harm. In Inverness, a shocking hit-and-run incident involving a stolen van and a cyclist is caught on CCTV. This sparks a desperate manhunt across the city as police realise that they are dealing with a man and woman who have embarked on a violent crime spree. On Skye, officers Cameron and Darren investigate the discovery of a child’s rucksack near an abandoned house. Thirty miles north, a taxi driver has been targeted in a vicious assault in Inverness city centre. A passenger punched and smashed his cab window after refusing to pay by cash and has disappeared into the night, with officers Laurie and Aiden in hot pursuit.
