What Do Artists Do All Day?

What Do Artists Do All Day?

Best known for 'Nelson's Ship in a Bottle', which appeared on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, Yinka Shonibare MBE is one of Britain's foremost contemporary artists, rising to fame as part of the 'Sensation' generation along with Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin in the early 1990s. Since then Shonibare has created a unique body of work. Often influenced by his Nigerian origins and combining darkness and humour, his art challenges our ideas about cultural identity and the post-colonial world. For the last 20 years Shonibare has created a series of distinctive 'mannequin' figures - anonymous, headless and dressed in African batik fabrics. This film follows Shonibare creating his latest figure and talking about his life and career.

Being the Brontës

Being the Brontës

Martha Kearney, novelist Helen Oyeyemi and journalist Lucy Mangan travel to Haworth Parsonage, the home of Charlotte Brontë and her sisters, Emily and Anne, to discover the inspiration behind their classic novels Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey. Just two years before the books were published, prospects for the three unmarried sisters were bleak. Their brother was battling alcoholism, Charlotte was hopelessly in love with a married man, and their father was going blind. But by 1848, they were a literary sensation. To find out how this extraordinary turnaround happened, Martha, Lucy and Helen each immerse themselves in the life of a Brontë sister. From everyday routines at the Parsonage to walks on windswept moors, from harsh schooldays to misadventures as governesses, the trio learn how the Brontës combined literary genius with real-life experience to create some of the best-loved novels in the English language.

Remembers...

Actor, producer and writer Kay Adshead reflects on her memorable portrayal of Cathy Earnshaw in the BBC’s 1978 adaptation of Wuthering Heights. She recalls the intensity of filming on the Yorkshire moors, working alongside Ken Hutchison as Heathcliff and bringing Emily Brontë’s storm-swept heroine to life. Kay also talks about the preparation behind the role - the research she undertook, combining the inspiration from earlier portrayals of Cathy with her own individual interpretation. With warmth and insight, she looks back on the challenges of the production, the legacy of the series and how the experience helped shape her early career.

The Read

The Read

Bradford-born actor Vinette Robinson gives a spellbinding performance as she narrates Emily Brontë’s groundbreaking novel. The much-loved work stands as a timeless classic, set against the haunting backdrop of the Yorkshire Moors and seen through the eyes of housekeeper Nelly Dean. At the heart of the story is the intense and destructive love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, whose passionate connection weaves a dark and tumultuous tale of revenge, obsession and the brutal forces of nature. The setting, the desolate moors, mirrors the wild and uncontrollable emotions of its characters, creating an atmospheric and Gothic backdrop for the drama. Emily Brontë’s exploration of the darker aspects of human nature and the complexities of love deviates from the societal norms of her time, making Wuthering Heights a trailblazing work in 19th-century literature.

The Many Primes of Muriel Spark

The Many Primes of Muriel Spark

Kirsty Wark celebrates the life and work of Dame Muriel Spark, author of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and one of the 20th century's most enigmatic cultural figures. Born in Edinburgh, Muriel's extraordinary life took her to colonial Africa, wartime London, literary New York and vibrant 1960s Rome. Her most famous novel - The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - immortalised the city of her childhood but with an added darkness and acerbic wit that became her trademark style. Kirsty retraces Muriel's footsteps from the cobbled streets of Edinburgh to the sublime beauty of Victoria Falls. Contributions from writers AL Kennedy, Janice Galloway, Ali Smith, William Boyd and Val McDermid tell of Muriel Spark's unique literary style and a life full of reinvention. Kirsty meets with the journalist Alan Taylor, author of a memoir of Muriel, and she travels to Italy for the first television interview with Penelope Jardine, Muriel's close friend of 40 years.
