Hauntings

Hauntings

On the night of Christmas 1998, a homeless man enters the infamous Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh. Seeking refuge, he broke into the tomb of George Mackenzie - Edinburgh’s famous executioner - and then fell into an assembly of decomposing corpses. His screams were heard above ground, but something else had been disturbed. Within weeks, stories of blackouts and inexplicable attacks began to spread. The injuries were so severe that Edinburgh City Council locked the gates and declared the area out of bounds for public safety. Jan Andrew Henderson began to chronicle the Mackenzie Poltergeist - only to claim to become a target of its malice.

Vasa: The Ghost Ship

The Vasa, one of the most majestic galleons ever to put to sea, sank 18 minutes after leaving Stockholm harbour on her maiden voyage in 1628. The loss of the Vasa was a major setback for Sweden’s ambitions to become a power in the Baltic during a turbulent period of European history. Three centuries later, in 1961, the wreck of the Vasa was raised. Remarkably well preserved by the mud and water in the Baltic Sea, she is a 17th-century time machine. Following the work of archaeologists, divers and historians, this programme plunges into Stockholm harbour to make new discoveries and reveal more about the lives of those who built, sailed and died on one of the most powerfully armed warships of her time.

Maddie's Do You Know?

In today’s episode Maddie is listening for sounds. First, she discovers how wearing a hearing aid can help us hear more clearly. She meets 7 year old Zara who uses a hearing aid, before visiting the audiology department in a children’s hospital to see where hearing aids are made. Maddie finds out what happens when we have our hearing tested. She listens to different sounds through headphones so the Audiologist can see how well her ears hear sounds. Maddie then uses her special microscopic camera to see the tiny parts of the hearing aid before showing us what it’s like to have one fitted. Next, Maddie heads to a whistle factory to see how they are made. She uses her special camera to see big, strong stamping machines cut shapes out of brass and finds out how the cork ball gets put inside the whistle when it’s too big for the hole.

The powerful cast includes Bob Peck, who played Ronald Craven, Joe Don Baker, as a shadowy American intelligence operative, and Ian McNeice, who tells us of his memories of the show; the melding of the personal and political in the storyline, his awareness of just how impactful it had been as soon as it transmitted, how the plot presented arguments still relevant today, and his pride in being associated with what rapidly became one of the standout works in television drama.

It tells the story of how he first arrived in the UK in 1975, along with the E Street Band, for two sold-out performances at the Hammersmith Odeon, giving his album Born to Run its European premiere. This was later followed by successful tours in 1981 and 1985, with the story being brought up to date with the triumphant 2024 UK tour. As well as an exclusive, revealing interview with Springsteen himself, the documentary uses archive footage and interviews with friends, contributors and fellow musicians, along with the stories of 'ordinary' fans.

Remembers...

Broadcast at a time when nuclear politics was firmly on the current affairs agenda, Edge of Darkness quickly established itself as a landmark moment in British TV history. Writer Troy Kennedy Martin drew on his experience of scripting shows like Z Cars and The Sweeney in creating this BAFTA-winning series. The powerful cast includes Bob Peck, who played Ronald Craven, Joe Don Baker, as a shadowy American intelligence operative, and Ian McNeice, who tells us of his memories of the show: the melding of the personal and political in the storyline, his awareness of just how impactful it had been as soon as it transmitted, how the plot presented arguments still relevant today, and his pride in being associated with what rapidly became one of the standout works in television drama.

Inside Museums

Inside Museums

Emma Dabiri admits that travel is in her blood. Now, as leaving the country becomes increasingly fraught in the global pandemic, she finds a new way of seeing the world through selected artworks at Ulster Museum in Northern Ireland's capital, Belfast. From the portraiture of Pompeo Batoni to the etchings of Giovanni Piranesi, her tour takes in the splendour of Rome as well as Sri Lanka, Morocco, Mexico and even Antarctica. She examines how artists brought to the UK their vision of the world and metaphorically transported art lovers across continents before the invention of the jet engine. The Dublin born social historian takes us around the gallery highlighting how depictions of far flung landscapes and cultures were sometimes overly romanticised or blatantly sexualised. And how, for many, travel in previous centuries was less about tourism and more about emigration, saying goodbye to loved ones probably forever. While our passports remain largely unused, let artists show you their world beyond our shores.
