The Fairy-Tale Castles of King Ludwig II with Dan Cruickshank

The Fairy-Tale Castles of King Ludwig II with Dan Cruickshank

WARNING : show ends after 00:45!! Ludwig II of Bavaria, more commonly known by his nicknames the Swan King or the Dream King, is a legendary figure - the handsome boy-king, loved by his people, betrayed by his cabinet and found dead in tragic and mysterious circumstances. He spent his life in pursuit of the ideal of beauty, which found expression in three of the most extraordinary, ornate architectural schemes imaginable - the castle of Neuschwanstein and the palaces of Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee. Today, these three buildings are among Germany's biggest tourist attractions. In this documentary, Dan Cruickshank explores the rich aesthetic of Ludwig II - from the mock-medievalism of Neuschwanstein, the iconic fairy-tale castle that became the inspiration for the one in Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty, to the rich, baroque splendour of Herrenchiemsee, Ludwig's answer to Versailles. Dan argues that Ludwig's castles are more than flamboyant kitsch and are, in fact, the key to unravelling the eternal enigma of Ludwig II.

Great British Railway Journeys

Great British Railway Journeys

Michael Portillo strikes out to explore the Britain of his youth. He’s a 'boomer', born in the decade after the end of the Second World War, and he recalls the optimism and excitement of rebuilding a nation exhausted by conflict. He relives the agony and the ecstasy of British Rail and marvels at the new society and culture that emerged in postwar Britain. At Preston’s Fulwood Barracks in Lancashire, Michael is called up for National Service but fails to impress the drill sergeant. Two veterans share their memories of postwar military action. At the Preston Bypass, now part of the M6, he hears how the pioneering project aimed to tackle congestion and link the north of England to the south. In Blackburn, Michael investigates the town’s political heritage and its fiery red-headed MP, Barbara Castle. At Bury Bolton Street station in Greater Manchester, Michael meets the volunteers who operate the fabulously preserved East Lancashire Heritage Railway and learns how the Beeching cuts affected rail services in the area.

JLB: The Man Who Saw the Future

JLB: The Man Who Saw the Future

In 1926, John Logie Baird became the first man in history to give a successful public demonstration of television. During WWII, with the help of one assistant, a part-time glassblower and a refugee from Germany, he built his masterpiece and swansong - the Telechrome. It was the foundation of all modern electronic colour television. In a lifetime blighted with ill health, JLB - as he was known - produced 178 patents crucial to the technology that would define the 20th century. But since his early death in 1946, his achievements have been allowed to slip from view, obscured by ignorance about what he pioneered. Few are aware that much of his greatest work was done in complete seclusion, in his personal laboratory and entirely at his own expense. Filmed in the UK, USA and Germany between 1994 and 2002 and featuring previously unseen archive and historic eyewitness testimony led by his son Malcolm, this documentary reveals the unknown story of the central figure behind the most powerful technology on earth.

Inside Classical

Inside Classical

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 90th birthday, from their home at City Halls in Glasgow, with a very special concert presented by Tom Service. World-renowned pianist Sir Stephen Hough performs Edvard Grieg’s only completed piece for soloist and orchestra, his iconic and much-loved Piano Concerto in A minor. The orchestra continues to champion new music with a world premiere by one of the country's most exciting and fearless composers, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, who is known for crossing musical boundaries and successfully combining her classical training with contemporary styles like R&B and soul. She has written a brand new work called Bacchanale to mark the occasion. To finish the concert, The National Youth Choir of Scotland and soloists Pumeza Matshikiza, Beth Taylor, John Findon and Ashley Riches join the orchestra for Michael Tippett’s epic oratorio A Child of Our Time. It is one of the 20th century's most visionary pieces, composed in pain, protest and empathy as the Second World War raged in Europe. It was Tippet’s response to the Nazi genocide of the Jews, and his music is a never more relevant plea for compassion, understanding and peace in our own time.

Surprisingly for an object of its size, the Bayeux Tapestry is not mentioned in any contemporary records. So where does it come from? Who made it and why? Archaeologists, historians, biologists, anthropologists and even astrophysicists are unlocking some of the tapestry’s mysteries to understand better the story it tells us about England and France at that time. At nearly 70 metres in length, the Bayeux Tapestry includes 623 characters, hundreds of animals and a wide diversity of scenes depicting everyday life and epic events. It is a treasure trove of information, offering an extraordinary insight into a pivotal moment in history.

Little more than 100 years ago, Scottish mountains standing at more than 3,000 feet were virtually unknown. This documentary tells the story of the magnificent peaks that bear his name and the people who have been possessed by them. The birth of this obsession - now known as Munrobagging - is a twisting tale of intrigue, which presenter Nicholas Crane unravels high on the ridges and pinnacles of some of Scotland's most spectacular mountains.
